Macro or supermacro setting
Welcome to bugguide.

It would be good to get some more detailed images of these western species. Does your camera have a macro (or better, a supermacro) setting? That would permit you to take very close-range shots with a lot more detail.

Also, unless you are using a flash, it's best to put a dark-colored beetle on a dark background so your camera sets the right exposure for the beetle instead of the light background. That would have helped in this case.

yes, I have a macro lens and it allows me to take 1cm shots
