First seen walking on an oak gall, then on adjacent parts of the tree, next to the Iron Horse Trail, afternoon.

Deathwatch beetle is where I would look first....

Looks very close to acorn anobiid - Ozognathus cornutus

Interesting
These images are so shamefully blurry that I hesitated to post them, but if you're right about the species, there may be a significant find here about range. All photos so far are from Bay Area counties, and mine are the farthest from the coast. (The other people's images are blurry, too.)

The gall that this beetle was on was old and had a big hole on one side.
