potter wasp at nest - Ancistrocerus undescribed-b

potter wasp at nest - Ancistrocerus undescribed-b
Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
June 17, 2011
Size: 1.5 cm
This wasp seemed smaller than the usual paper wasp we have around here. This was visiting a hard cement-like deposit added to the side of a concrete veranda at the front side of a residence. Did it build the structure, which measured about 7-8 cm in diameter?

Interesting!
This is the first time I see a nest of this undescribed species. Your observation is very interesting. The more common species related to the one shown here nest in decaying wood. Only a few make free-standing mud nests.

Specimen??
Do you want me to collect this wasp? Assuming it's still there?

Too late!
I returned to the site Saturday afternoon, but the owner had swept the structure away. No wasp to collect.
