Cecropia Moth H#7767 - Hyalophora cecropia

Cecropia Moth H#7767 - Hyalophora cecropia
City of Greater Sudbury, Fairbank Lake, Ontario, Canada
June 18, 2011
Size: approx 12cm wingspan
Wings what colour! Hard to believe it survives its few days as an adult without eating...the energy it must have stored up! It's tummy is black and white striped, seems to have no red there -except the bushy tip of the abdomen? And the bottom set of wings have no patterns near the edges, just a white stripe near their edge as an outline. It is not red red like the robin. Could not match it to the Cecropias I looked at in the guide?

i thought so too but
unless the pattern and abdomen colours change in its short life time, there are but black and white stripes on it. Also the lower wings have a different outer edge pattern that any I could spot in the pages of the guide!

I found this note on one of the pictures in the guide here. Maybe this explains it?:

During development of the adult within the pupa, differentials between day and night temp's may affect the pigmentation resulting in darker & grayer moths with reduced red coloration. Being that this individual emerged early in the season, it is possible the coloration is a result of "cold" nights combined with mild days.

interesting,
never considered this, but would it really explain the lack of red stripes on the abdomen? or is the comment refering to the wings?
