Limnephilidae: Limnephilus?

Limnephilidae: Limnephilus?
Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
June 23, 2011
Size: Length ~ 12-14 mm
This caddis seems prevalent in our area just now. It looks similar to a specimen I posted a few weeks back (see thumb), but it may be a different species. I can't tell. Is it another Limnephlius? Thanks! ;-)

Moved
Moved from Caddisflies.

Hydropsychidae
cannot tell which genus from this photo - the large size leads to Hydropsyche but cannot be sure.

Thanks, Dave!
Okay. I'll get another, better photo and more accurate measurements. Let's frass this image. ;-)

Sorry my comment was misleading. I probably cannot separate any of the hydropsychid genera from an adult photo like this. There are some odd venation characters that may help but they are not readily seen in these photos. The only sure way I know in this family is by private parts. You will need the specimen in hand. Unfortunately there are lots of caddis that are pretty tough for me to determine based on photos such as you are taking.

Good point, Dave!
That's a lesson I've learned, forgotten, and relearned many times on this forum (i.e., the features of the photographed specimen that I think may be of taxomonic importance are generally of trivial importance). ;-)

What I thought was peculiar about this specimen was its remarkably short abdomen, Dave. Is this a feature I'd expect to see among adult male caddisflies? (Most of the other specimens I've photographed had much longer abdomens, and all of those were female as I recall). Just curious. Thanks for your tireless contributions to this forum and to my continuing education!
