Need help to identify fly (?)

Last summer while working outside in the yard I got bit by what I thought was a black fly. It was about 1/8" to 1/4". It had triangle wings going out from the sides. The bite stung. I did not really thing about it, after a couple of days, the area produced a red ring with dots along the ring's edge. The area is also itchy. Now the red area has split into two areas. I have gone to two physicians about it, with no results. I saw another fly last year, but the pain factor kicked in and I nailed him. I know, I should have put that black bugger in a pill bottle, but too late. If anyone has ideas, please let me know, thanks! Red Patches

Prolonged reaction after bite
To clarify, have you had a rash at the bite site for the past year? Prolonged reactions can last months, but typically are fading for most of that time. There can also be changes in skin color, texture, and thickness left over after the inflammation is gone, but that doesn't really sound like what you are talking about. If present, on-going inflammation suggests that there is an on-going substance present, as is seen with infection. Most of the infections spread by biting flies in the US (eg stable flies, horse flies) are easily dealt with by the human immune system because the pathogens are adapted to living in other mammals. If you would like to provide additional details, I can be contacted by the email address on my profile page.
