bedbug family and...on or near host animal (birds and mammals)
as to the bat...if it was sick and dying you probably should report it to be tested for rabies. it dont look all that good

Notification to USGS

You are right. I found an email address on a USGS National Wildlife Health Center web page that talks about a bat illness called White Nose Syndrome.. so I wrote to that person informing them of what appeared to be a sick bat.

Do you think that it might have been rabid?

Curious. I don't immediately

Curious. I don't immediately recognize it, but the NE fauna is somewhat different than the one is work with most often. What is the host- it looks like an oak based on the bark in the background, but what is in the foreground- is it a leaf petiole or a twig? With that info, I may be able to narrow it down or solicit opinions from other experts.

The host is a bat

The insects are hanging out on the leg of a bat. The bat seemed sick or dying. Perhaps the bugs were sucking it's blood or something..
