Ferguson(2008) described this species distinguishing it from Speranza (Macaria) guenearia. (1)

Size
Forewing length:(1)
♀ 11-16 mm.
♂ 11-15 mm.
Identification
Yellow postmedial band is slightly irregular, often interrupted and not of uniform width.
There is usually some dark gray shading on both sides of yellow band often being a dark wedge shaped spot on the outer side of the band.(1)

Range
California, from Los Angeles and Ventura counties to Baja. There is some overlapping with Macaria guenearia in the northern part of the range. (2), (1)
Season
Records of adults are mostly from April to June. (1)
Food
Larval host is redberry buckthorn, Rhamnus crocea. (1)

Macaria guenearia which differs by
Having a more straight yellow postmedial band of uniform width.
The costa is much more yellow.
There are no dark wedge shaped spots on the outer side of the yellow postmedial. band(1)
