Need Help Identifying Blue/Black Flying Insect!

Hello everyone! I'm new here, but I'm interested in knowing what this insect is:

It flies around the border of my house, especially in the corners of windows, and only seems to be out midday. It's blue/black iridescent in color and kind of "twitches" when it's not flying. I've seen it the past couple of years where I live in Staten Island, New York.

I'm really sorry for posting this insect if it's a common one I should know. I would have searched more on the internet first, but I'm kind of squeamish (though I'm trying hard not to be!) and am a bit afraid of what I'll have to look at if I do an image search.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can offer!
