Saw this beautiful insect while hiking in the Shenandoah National Park - almost sat on it! Am wondering what kind of bug it is. Is it related to the wasp family? Thanks!

Thanks to Ilona for digging out Yurika's image, else I would just have been scratching my head about this pair as I had for Yurika's. In these new images, the prominence of the scutellum told me to look through the Callajoppa group for a species with a banded flagellum and a bicolored metasoma, and the only one is the present species (flagellum banded in female only). This species isn't very common in collections, so it is really nice to have these photos in BG.

Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

I'll bet Ilona's right. Let's see what Dr. Carlson has to say.

Just a guess but I think it resembles this one -- Ichneumon Wasp.
