Phyllophaga...but which one? - Phyllophaga luctuosa - male Phyllophaga.- UPDATED PHOTOS - Phyllophaga luctuosa - male

Moved
Moved from May Beetles. Fairly confident on this, but if you can, please check genitalia against the the first reference I cited below, which is available online. Having the specimen in hand, you can confirm that it does indeed match P. luctuosa.

looks right to me...
I couldn't find that first reference online, but was able to find sharp photos of this species in the Generic Guide to New World Scarab Beetles
here.

Great
Thanks.

Hmm
Challenging, as the genitalia images aren't the clearest. My best guess is P. luctuosa (Horn), but I'm not entirely sure as I haven't seen the species before. I'll ask around.

I'll try
and get some sharper photos.

Literature
Since you seem to be interested in Phyllophaga, there a couple of good regional works for your area. One is Woodruff and Beck's The Scarab Beetles of Florida (1) which is available online. There is also Philip Harpootlian's Scarab Beetles of South Carolina (2) which may still be available for purchase.
