Pinhead sized bug in and around kitty litter and food

I have a severe infestation of an unidentified pinhead sized bug. Looking at in under a magnifying glass, it appears to have 6 legs and two feelers out front. It's body and legs are almost clear yet the body has brown lines in it. It is extremely small yet moves very fast. I found them in my kitty litter pans, hanging on the walls around that area; apparently the cats are spreading them around the house from their fur also. They have gotten on me; you can feel them crawl however I am unsure if they are bitting, as they cause me to itch and therefore I am scratching. I don't believe they are bedbugs. Please help! I need to find something to debug my entire house and me and my cats. This is disgusting!

Strange... I was going to say cat louse, maybe? Anyway my initial comment didn't take.

Just a suggestion...
...since no one else has commented. One possibility that comes to mind is springtails. Do they look anything like this?

If so, you can find more information here.

Bird Mites
They are bird mites. Not sure how to add the picture, but here is a web site with the picture: "http://www.livingwithbugs.com/bird_mites.html"

I am at my wits end. I'm finding all sorts of conflicting stuff; regardless, I have a major infestations; on my cats, on me, spread to 4 rooms. Found a bird's nest on my front porch; that is where they came in also; around the windows, door, light fixture. My biggest fear is that they are in the walls, crawl space, etc. Windex seems to put the down; organic bug sprays seem to be working. Going to power wash the outside of the house and use one of the bug spray bottles that connect to the garden hose and hit the house outside and ground.
The birds are very upset and every time I walk outside they try to dive bomb me. Time to get the shotgun out I'm afraid!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am losing my mind here. The sprays have killed thousands of them in my house; however I am finding even smaller ones still crawling that could have been in nooks and crannies and missed the sprays.

What would be the best way to approach this? Do I need to get into the affected outside wall and make sure they are not in the wall first?

It's BugGuide's policy
not to provide control/extermination advice (because that's not our area of expertise). I'd encourage you to seek professional assistance. You're likely to get more helpful and accurate information from extension offices, universities, etc., rather than from folks who want to sell you pest control services. Good luck!

We don't offer pest control advice...
We typically teach people how to live with insects, but I do sympathize. Sounds like a real pain! You may have an issue that is out of your control, and I really do suggest contacting a professional. Your local university extension may be able to tell you who will work the best.

If they are bird lice, you may have a nest of birds somewhere inside your home, whether in the structure or elsewhere. That's something else to consider.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and go to greater lengths dealing with things like this. I do wish you luck.

I agree, spring tails are the
I agree, spring tails are the most likely bet. They are very common indoors this time of year.
