looks like Culex restuans. I am not sure if these have been reported for Newfoundland before.

 
Culiseta?
A comment on another photo in the series says "With the wing vein pattern, I think this is most likely a Culiseta (see the m-r/r-cu veins are nearly parallel)".

Female
Mosquitoes, black flies, midges, horse flies, and deer flies that bite you are female. The only biting male flies I have heard of look like house flies.
