Came to black light/MV trap. (live oak/chaparral habitat).

excellent. thanks, Gary and Paul.
Moved from Aphodiini.

Cinacanthus sp.
I can't make out the body setae well enough nor the pronotal punctation. But, I don't think this is the common C. militaris. Cinacanthus (as many aphodiine genera) needs revisionary work, but the materials are too scarse. I hope this is in someone's collection to be studied later.

Thank you Paul
for the genus ID. I did retain the specimen. I've been using a black light/MV trap to collect moths which I photograph and then send to BOLD at Guelph for ID. Any non-moth insects that I find in the trap, I photograph, and if they appear not to be something common, I retain the specimens with the intention to send them to Cal. Acad. Sci., where I also send all of the marine inverts that I collect. I can then link the insect photo at CalPhotos to the specimen accession number at Cal. Acad., just as I've done for marine inverts that I've photographed over the last several years. I've not yet sent any insects to CAS, but have corresponded with the entomology dept and they are willing to accept the specimens when I send them. My intention, of course, is to have them ID the specimens I sent so that I can label my photos appropriately.

this is something very cool.
