Forage Looper, Caenurgina erechtea - Caenurgina

Forage Looper, Caenurgina erechtea - Caenurgina
Warren County, New York, USA
July 28, 2004
I think this might be a Forage Looper (Noctuidae:Caenurgina erechtea) but a web search has shown quite a lot of variation, so I'm afraid it will end up being one of those that can't be ID'd just from a picture. I spotted a picture in Covell on one of his black-and-white plates that looked something like this. I did a web search for Caenurgina and decided that it was perhaps the Forage Looper. Some pictures show a gray color but others show a brown color much like this.

This was in a small fen with a variety of sedges, grasses, cattails, a mix of deciduous and conifer trees. Outside the fen is a residential area of a small village. Unlike most day-flying moths this one let me get quite close. This picture has not been cropped, so figure the camera was just a few inches away from the moth. It's about an inch long (no ruler!). The picture was taken about 1PM.

I agree
There are some other Caenurgina species listed at Nearctica.com, but Covell (1) only lists three of those and NCSU only has two. Based on the notes in Covell this would definitely be erechtea because the bands on the wings don't even come close to touching. The habitat you describe matches as well. This would also be a male because Covell notes that females don't have noticeable bands.

Thanks
Well, with two of us thinking it's a forage looper, I'll move it to the Owlet page. By the way, the move feature is really slick.
