Spruce Sawyer - Monochamus scutellatus - Monochamus scutellatus - Fort McMurray, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, Canada July 6, 2011 Size: 20mm, 55mm w/ antennae
This little guy flew into my backyard, so I grabbed my camera. Almost undoubtably a male Monochamus scutelattus. I love these beetles because of their amazing antennae. They're also able to make a sqeaking noise when threatened by flexing the joint between their head and thorax. Grabbing them is a little tricky though because of how powerful their jaws are, and because of how awkwardly their little spindly legs stick up.
