Well, at least I can ID the ant. It is a nocturnal, soil-nesting species of the carpenter ant genus.
The little critters on her legs are mites. It might be worth re-posting this in the mite section for an ID. . .Wait, there is no mite section at BG. But I have a feeling this one might be relatively easy to track down.

 
C. fragilis
has colonies in the area. Wow, those alates are 20 times the size of the normal workers! This was a single lady (?) But the next night, there were dozens of them around. I had already figured they were Carpenters, so nice to hear they aren't the wood working kind.
