I thought this was dead and picked it up and dropped it when I realized it was alive.

What is it!!??? Does it sting or bite or both? It sure looks like it does!!

Moved from Trichiosoma.

Abia sp.
Pictures a little dark, but Trichiosoma has dense long hairs on head and body. Must be a species of Abia. Does not sting. Possibly could bite but have never heard of it.

Cimbicidae
Thia is a completly harmless sawfly symphyta). Memberes of this group still have their ovipositor fot laying eggs. In wasps like yellowjackets, this ovipositor is modified into a stinger. The antenna show that this is a member of the family Cimbicidae.

I had a feeling the antenae would tell someone something-even though the photos isn't that great-cos the critter is mostly black.

I noticed it has huge jaws. It looks very wasp-like but looks like it has no stinger-so sort of wondered.

Compared to the other saw flies which I have also mistaken for wasps,it's huge!
