Syrphidae: Toxomerus geminatus or T. marginatus - Toxomerus marginatus - male - female

Syrphidae: Toxomerus geminatus or T. marginatus - Toxomerus marginatus - Male Female
Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 4, 2011
Pair coupled during flight, clearly part of their mating behavior. Shows clearly the difference in facial features of a male (top) and female (bottom). Note that the male does all of the flying. I suspect that flying while mating helps to protect the pair from predation, compared to those who are sitting on a plant, which also occurs. This was, I suppose, a lucky shot, although it took some work to get. It was only possible because they tend to hover when in flight, which gives one time to focus on them and take the photo. Equipment: Nikon D200, Tokina 100mm macro lens, 1.4X Teleplus Pro 300 extender and Nikon R1C1 wireless flash unit.

Beautiful!
wonder if this is actual mating, or pre-mating flight ritual, or post-mating mate guarding?? Fascinating!
