Metepeira or possibly Neoscona ? - Metepeira

Metepeira or possibly Neoscona ? - Metepeira
Borrego Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
February 28, 1999
Size: BL~4 mm
I was checking out Neoscona and came across an image of N. arabesca, # 115476. It had the black spots very similar to this spider, but the spider is upside down and so difficult to compare spot to spot, so to speak. I have rotated the image so is is in the same orientation as #115476. They are not identical above the spots, but the dark spots and white areas by them seem very similar. Do you see the similarity, or am I on the wrong track for another reason? Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks for rotating. This may be helpful for comparing to PDF drawings in the future. Your spider is not N. arabesca. N. arabesca doesn't have a black carapace. Metepeira is quite common in Southern CA. I think we have the genus correct.

Thanks for looking at this image--and your information about the black carapace. All these desert orbs are quite similar--and quite variable. I really appreciate your help in sorting them out.
