The guide has something similar listed as
Western Tent Caterpillar
, but there was just a discussion on
about whether that original determination was correct. Looks like we need to do some more research. Beautiful image! Did you see lots of them around? Any tents? Any idea what it had been eating?

Caterpillar
It was alone and at first was just on a piece of wood, very small piece. I took a couple of shots of it and then I let it go onto some leaves. It wasn't interested in the leaves though. Took some pics and let it go. Haven't seen any tents etc as yet.

Check these out
Caifornia Tent Caterpillar
- there seem to be both of our patterns represented. I think perhaps that dorsal blue-gray-white line is highly variable. None of the websites I've seen really addresses that!
