Rainbow Scarab - Phanaeus vindex - male

Rainbow Scarab - Phanaeus vindex - Male
Raven Rock State Park, Harnett County, North Carolina, USA
April 9, 1999
This individual was engaged in burying a dung ball, apparently with a female. I pulled it up and washed the dung off with a bit of water for a photo session. It returned to work unharmed. These critters are hard to focus on--they are so shiny. This is clearly a "major" male.
