Unknown (Crescent Spot??) Butterfly - Phyciodes cocyta - female

Unknown (Crescent Spot??) Butterfly - Phyciodes cocyta - Female
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
July 11, 2011
Size: 1"± Wing Span
Flitted around very nervously ... landed on leaves and small flowers. Wing undersides are quite light with thin & erratic bronze lines. It looks much like a Crescent Spot but my reference book doesn't have a good match.

You are correct - this is a Crescent
They are somewhat varied in pattern. This is a female, and is looks like probably a "Northern Crescent" - Phyciodes cocyta, or perhaps it is a "Pearl Crescent - Phyciodes tharos. They are often difficult to tell apart, especially the females.
