Opomyza
Family Opomyzidae.

There are two species of Opomyza in North America, both introduced from Europe. Opomyza germinationis has been recorded from Newfoundland and I've collected it myself not far from Logy Bay. We've also collected Opomyza petrei on Cape Breton Island, NS, and it's likely also in Newfoundland. You need a good view of the abdomen to distinguish the two species.

love your pix, Mardon. neat beasts, too.

Thank you V.
I enjoy both the photography and the 'bugs' but I wish my memory were better. I'm sure that sometimes I don't recognize a 'bug' even though I was given an ID for a similar individual only a few days earlier. Age I guess. :(

I'm so grateful that you and several others here don't seem to mind telling me what the creatures in my photos are even if it's a repeat from a only few days earlier. Many thanks for that.

Have you seen the photo book that I published? I published the first edition as a paperback in 2008 but only this week I decided to publish a second edition as a free PDF file under a Creative Commons license. It's free to download. If you're interested, see here:

thanks much for the link and the astonishing work
keep augmenting & expanding the book. superb source, Mardon.

Thanks again and...
What kind comments! Many thanks. :)

I'd like to do another book. If I do so, I'd go directly to a digital edition. The next go-round I would not publish a paperback version first. I can't afford to lose more money by publishing another printed book. :)

The only 'requirement' for a second digital book to happen is that you and others on BugGuide be willing to keep telling me the names of the 'bugs' that I photograph. Without all your help, I'd have absolutely nothing to write to accompany the photos.

Incidentally, in the digital book that I just published, I intentionally included PDF security settings that allow for "high quality printing" from the digital file. If someone is really serious about wanting a paper copy, they can always take the digital file to a printer. The photo resolution wouldn't be quite as high as in the file that I actually used to print the paperback version but I think the quality would still be acceptable. I just couldn't afford a second printing of the paperback version and sell it for $25 when it cost me more than that for the printing alone. :(
