This could well be Formica fusca itself.

 
It sure looks like it!
After reading your suggestion, I compared my photos with this photo at myrmecos.net and they certainly do look alike. Thanks. It's interesting that this all black Formica was on our driveway and there seems to be a nest of the red and black Formica under a rock in our back yard. This ant was VERY fast and that made it extremely hard to photograph. He just wouldn't stop to pose.
