Active Dolichovespula maculata nest - Dolichovespula maculata

Active Dolichovespula maculata nest - Dolichovespula maculata
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 14, 2011
Came across this nest while strolling through a local cemetery. It was very large and very beautiful! The hornets were going in-and-out of the side (vents?) as well as the main entrance hole. Being that it was a hot day and they were VERY active around the nest, I didn't get any closer than this for fear of making them angry...they "fired a few warning shots across my bow" occasionally while I took shots (individuals saw me and flew directly at me from the nest, either just checking me out as a new presence, or to warn me to stay away, or both)
