Large Spider - Nashville

Last night I went out on to my back porch and was bending down behind the door to pick something up. I saw something out of the corner of my eye, and found myself face to face with a very large spider hanging from one strand of web. Never seen one like this before so maybe someone can help me. I'd say at least 1.5 inches in size with a very large rounded abdomen (the majority of the 1.5 inches was the body - legs were not especially long). I believe it was black in color, but couldn't be sure because it was dark out. The web around it was disorganized but large and ran from the top of the screen door to about halfway down and then across to a set of windchimes, as if a net was being created. The spider itself was not in the web but instead hanging above it. Just curious what it could be! I looked through all of the native Tennessee spiders but couldn't match it to any of those. I've seen my fair share of wolf spiders and know they can be quite large, but this looked NOTHING like one, and I don't think they spin webs anyway.

..
If it has a web the spider might still be there. Can you take a picture of it?

I'll try to get one this even
I'll try to get one this evening. My boyfriend said he had been there for several days, only shows himself when it starts getting dark out.

No images?
A common orb weaver that comes out after dark is Neoscona crucifera. Did it look like this:

Also, you are correct... wolf spider do not spin webs.
