black and white mystery moth - Tallula fieldi

black and white mystery moth - Tallula fieldi
Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 4, 2011
Amazing that something so boldly marked wouldn't come up with any matches on MPG. I've been looking all over the place but can't find anything close. Any ideas?

I wonder if this could be Tallula fieldi Hodges#5594.

Calphoto image

The specimen in the Calphoto image was apparently collected from Santa Catalina Island.

I think you've got it - thanks!
I'm not sure how I missed it when going through the Pyralidae plates in MWNA, but I'm sure grateful that you found it - it looks like a perfect match. MWNA says that it is a distinctive species, and on Catalina Island it feeds on Monterey Cypress, which isn't native to the island. "The larvae live in sparse webs externally on densely clumped cones of cypress." As it turns out, I photographed some Monterey Cypress not far from where I found this moth, which only helps the case.

Looks like another new one for BugGuide!
