Shy cosmet pupa case - Limnaecia phragmitella

Shy cosmet pupa case - Limnaecia phragmitella
Pine River, Cass County, Minnesota, USA
July 16, 2011
Size: ~8mm
I collected a puffy cattail stalk from a nearby pond in April and kept in a jar. Several shy cosmet moths emerged in late June and July. This picture shows an empty pupal case of the shy cosmet within its "cocoon" of cattail down (all you can really see is the cocoon). The cocoon (lower right) is attached to the cattail down right where the down connected to the cattail stalk -- as deep inside the cattail head as the caterpillar could've pupated. Small ruler marks at bottom are millimeters.
