Pavement Ants? - Tapinoma sessile

Pavement Ants? - Tapinoma sessile
Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, USA
July 16, 2011
I know pretty much zero about Formicids. I've read that Pavement ants are the ones that show up and adapt so well to eating human food- these guys made quick work of pizza scraps at my friend's place.

Moved
These are not the Asian pavement ants - Tetramorium tsushimae - that are also abundant in Columbia MO. This is a native species, and one that is really increasing in abundance in this region, for reasons not well understood, but perhaps related to the series of relatively mild winters and wet summers we've had recently.
