Spine-waisted Ant - Aphaenogaster tennesseensis

Spine-waisted Ant - Aphaenogaster tennesseensis
Radford, Virginia, USA
July 2, 2011
Red ants were trailing along a fungus of some sort. I'd like an ID for the critters, please.

Though these do not eat fungi, they often forage for the larvae and other small insects that live in fungi.

I love names
that are much longer than the critter! Thanks for the ID and info.

Moved from ID Request.

Aphaenogaster.
I can't give you a species ID, but pretty certain the genus is Aphaenogaster. They have no relationship to fungi that I am aware of.

Thanks,
Eric, genus ID is very helpful.
