Keys to
P. brachyrhynchus
in Camras (1955) via characters: frons yellowish-red, without sharply-defined "T" pattern; 1st posterior cell with some darkening; no complete pollinose stripe across upper hind edge of head; dark species. Agrees very well with description the synonym
Conops xanthopareus
, except for the pattern of wing darkening...which is difficult to make out from the images and appears to be (anomalously) uniformly dark. The 1st basal cell is typically mostly hyaline (which appears to possibly be the case with the wing at left here).
At any rate, all things considered,
P. branchyrynchus
is the best fit (
P. excisus
is ruled out by the lack of an uninterrupted pollinose stripe along the hind edge of the head;
P. discalis
is ruled out by the subequal 2nd & 3rd antennal segments here).
