Bee or Fly? - Hemaris diffinis

Bee or Fly? - Hemaris diffinis
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
July 20, 2011
Size: 1.25 inches
This insect was hovering over the flower when I took the photo. It's wings don't show, but you can see that it is sipping nectar. We spotted it near a roadside trail at a park.

Marty is correct, Hemaris diffinis - Hodges#7855
Moved from ID Request.

Hemaris diffinis - Snowberry Clearwing - Hodges #7855 with the dark legs.

I appreciate your very fast response. Once I cropped the photo and saw the moth's tongue dipping into the flower, I should have been able to make a closer guess than I did. But, certainly, when we spotted it, "moth" never crossed our minds. Now we're even more excited about seeing it -- a first for me and my grown son.
