Andrenids? - Diadasia

Andrenids? - Diadasia
Decker Rd, Malibu, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 24, 2011
Size: ~1.5cm
Thinking some type of andrenid bees. There was a swarm of 1000+ of these guys in a clearing in the chaparral. On the ground were what appeared to be balls of bees trying to mate. All individuals in the linked photos were originally part of this ball. Some bees were also observed entering and exiting small holes (less than 1cm in diameter) in the ground within this clearing

The eyes remind me of carpent
The eyes remind me of carpenter bees, but I didn't think they had this type of behavior. Wing venation is very similar to this one.

yes, these are Diadasia
males

at this date they could be D. enavata. Is sunflower blooming nearby?
