Katydid or Conehead - male

Katydid or Conehead - Male
Bunker Hill Forest Preserve, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 22, 2011

Thanks,
should we just frass this?

I suppose I'd probably leave it.
It's a good photo (we have a lot of bad ones), and having photos of the nymphs is not a bad thing, even if they are hard to tell apart. It lets people see what the young ones look like, even if we aren't sure what species they are. It's not bad to know that they are hard to tell apart.

But, it's a judgement call.

hmmm
A meadow katydid for sure.

Are you suggesting something more specific than tribe
or are you simply agreeing with the tribe identification?

Conocephalus or Orchelimum
It's hard to identify nymphs of many of these Meadow Katydid species, and even hard to tell which genus. Location and presence of wings narrows it down to two genera. Sometimes nymphs need to be associated with adults (or raised to adulthood) before even the genus is certain. The older they get the more they look like the adults, but until they actually are adults, some of the key features are often not clear.

Having said all that, based on location and coloring, I'd say it is quite likely Conocephalus brevipennis
