I think I found another at the same lake camp, can an expert confirm please?
How can one distinguish between male and female?

Yep, Geotrupes balyi is corre
Yep, Geotrupes balyi is correct.

Geotrupes balyi
You can see that the sutural stria wraps around the scutellum. that narrows it down to balyi or hornii. hornii is jet black while balyi always has a metallic blue or green sheen (or at least that is what Phil Harpootlian who is the expert here taught me).
