Scarab Beetle - Osmoderma eremicola

Scarab Beetle - Osmoderma eremicola
Chicago/Hyde Park, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 20, 2011
Size: roughly one inch
We found two of these beetles crawling across our sidewalk one night - this is the smaller of the two. From the online descriptions, it most closely resembles the scavenger scarab beetles, but these are rather large and do not have completely smooth exoskeletons. Specifically, they have a triangular shape where the thorax and abdomen meet and a gentle groove running down the center of their back. So I thought I would submit it and see if we could get a conclusive id.

Thanks!!
