Rabidosa rabida (?) mating - Rabidosa rabida - male - female

Rabidosa rabida (?) mating - Rabidosa rabida - Male Female
Oak Ridge, Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
July 30, 2011
These wolf spiders were mating on my woodpile beneath the porch light.
They allowed me to photograph them up close. The most interesting thing was that as the male extended his palp around to one side to reach her epigynum, the female rolled her abdomen over to accomodate him, to the left or right depending on his actions. He switched sides three or four times in the ten minutes or so that I observed them. You can see both approaches in these pictures. The close-up shows his inflated palp under the female.
