I suspect that this may be a bee fly but I am not sure. Any help in identifying this creature will be gratefully received - thank you

Thank you for the starting point... it is indeed Ecliminae... it is the Lepidophora lepidocera or "Scaly Bee Fly" - I was able to find it here on Bugguide.net using your reference as a starting point... your reference pointed to Lepidophora lutea - the pictures there looked almost the same but there was more 'fuzz' on the back of L.lutea... there was a link to l.lepidocera which is an identical match to my specimen so thanks again.

Bee fly
My vote is for bee fly but wow what an odd looking one.
