unknown insect CA hi desert - Shelfordella lateralis
Adelanto, San Bernardino County, California, USA

Size: 1.5 inches
After I sprayed around my house and lawn for Turkestan cockroaches I found this insect dead alone with many male Turkestan cockroaches. After searching the internet to ID the female Turkestan I decided this was something all together different, although the strip on the side is similar this insect is way to big and has a completely different head.

Female Turkestan Cockroach
The female pictured on the left was found where I drained my fountain and had been in water several days and that caused the swelling and the body to increase in length and width. Normally you do not see the white bands between body segments.

Moved
The lighter colored cockroach is a male, while the darker one is a female with those characteristic stripes on the wingpads. The abdomen does look a little odd, maybe because she is carrying eggs or else has a parasite.
Moved from Cockroaches and Termites.

Moved for expert attention
Moved from ID Request.

They're both cockroaches, although I wouldn't venture to go beyond that. Our cockroach specialist John Carlson should be able to tell you more.

Tuakestan cockroaches
I have been told that the lighter colored cockroach is a male Turkestan cockroach and the other is a female that had been soaking in water and expanded revealing the white strips between body segments.
