Confused about bees - Bombus - female

Confused about bees - Bombus - Female
Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
July 11, 2011
Size: small, about 1/2 inche
I think 1 and 2 are the same. Up till recently I presumed these were honeybees, reserving the bumblebee designation for really large bees. My son however thinks these are also bumblebees. I attach Bee_3 for reference which certainly resembles the honeybees I've seen on the bee-keepers' hives. If someone could clarify, I would be grateful. Thanks.
