Giant Lichen Orb Weaver identified in Bridgton, ME - Araneus bicentenarius

Giant Lichen Orb Weaver identified in Bridgton, ME - Araneus bicentenarius
Bridgton, Maine, USA
July 30, 2011
This large spider made a web each evening that was very large. This exact same spider may have also been seen crouched in a ball in front of a egg sac that was sealed in with webs in a separate location. It caught a large number of bugs at a lake-side cottage in Maine and would "spit out" the carcasses of those bugs it consumed or didn't want. It wouldn't go for mosquitos or 'damsel fly' like bugs preferring the scarab beetles and larger, meatier flying folk of the night.

Giant Lichen Orb Weaver!
Thank you for the quick identification. Watching this spider at work was fascinating. I'd never seen this type of spider before this summer, but I'm sure to keep my eyes out for it in the future.

I'd never seen them before this summer, either, but have seen several recently. They're gorgeous spiders, and their huge webs are works of art!
