Robber fly looks like a wasp or hornet -
Ceraturgus fasciatus
Fairfield, Somerset County, Maine, USA
August 3, 2011
Size: 27-30mm
this one had sparse "beard" and long antennae...it was also incredibly timid

Ceraturgus fasciatus
According to the 2008 Barnes revision of this genus, the only species found in Maine is
Ceraturgus fasciatus
. The quite similar
C. cruciatus
is limited to the midwest.

Only
One species of this fine genus in the far NE. C cruciatus. And the only one in the genus that can sometimes actually be common.
