First Instar Larva - newly emerged - Proserpinus terlooii

First Instar Larva - newly emerged - Proserpinus terlooii
Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA
August 4, 2011
Size: 2 mm
One egg hatched. Would not feed on Boerhavia coccinea and died the next day. I had a similar experience with a possible second instar larva not feeding. Later I collected a possible third instar larva and offered it Boerhavia coccinea in a homemade florist water tube (to keep it from wilting) and it readily ate. Unsure if the early instars needed younger leaves or if wilting was the problem.
