Robber Fly, Bee killer? - Mallophora orcina

Robber Fly, Bee killer? - Mallophora orcina
Near Conway, Northampton County, northeastern, NC County, North Carolina, USA
August 4, 2011
Size: A bit over an inch long
Fly was perched vertically on a steel rod, and I couldn't quite get down to his level, thus it appears a little bit compressed. I rotated it 90 degrees for easier viewing.

Not Laphria.
Give me a minute, I think I can place this to at least genus...

Bee hunter
It looks like a Sacken's bee hunter(Laphria sackeni) to me, but those only live on the west coast.

Stuffed toy Laphria?
At first glance I thought you'd managed to find a stuffed Robber fly toy! I'm guessing something in Laphria, though I bet someone can get you closer.
