White-striped caterpillar - Loscopia velata

White-striped caterpillar - Loscopia velata
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
May 20, 2006
Size: ~20mm
We found this caterpillar feeding on Luzula multiflora and figured anything eating such a wonderful plant must be a wonderful caterpillar! But we had no luck with Wagner (saw a Plusia with only two sets of abdominal prolegs!) And no luck with the caterpillar hostplant database. Aaargh! Lateral view.

A possibility
In the back of "Caterpillars in the Field and Garden" there are a handful of moth caterpillar photos, including Amphipoea velata, Veiled Ear Moth, that looks pretty similar. Is Luzula multiflora a grass?

Luzula is Hairy Wood Rush
It's in the rush family, Juncaceae.
