I found this insect larva swimming just under the surface of the water in a 20 acre lake in Hancock County KY while taking water samples.

Ephoron
This appears to be an Ephoron nymph.

 
Lloyd Gonzales comment:
Ephoron is a relatively slender, pale whitish burrower nymph that lacks the degree of tibial flanging found in this specimen. Looks like Hexagenia to me.

Burrowing Mayfly nymph
Some nice floks at the University of Kentucky were able to help me ID this critter finally! It is a Burrowing Mayfly Nymph.

It was friendly enough to let me scoop it up for some pictures, so I would say you are right! It got put right back in the water to continue it's swim, so I am sure it was happy too.

The front legs look very simi
The front legs look very similar to a mole cricket. But mole crickets aren't aquatic..... I'm assuming that mole cricket larva aren't aquatic either, correct?
