Acrobat ants (Crematogaster laeviuscula?) - Crematogaster laeviuscula

Acrobat ants (Crematogaster laeviuscula?) - Crematogaster laeviuscula
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
August 6, 2011
I've been calling these carpenter ants but they don't like anything I see when a do a search for those words. Here you see them sipping from the nectaries of trumpet vine. They also love my passion flowers and run home with their abdomens raised high or even held over their heads. It's the only kind of ant I have that habitually moves that way when not alarmed.

I'm not sure where to post videos, so I'll post it here. These are likely from the same colony.

I'm curious about the very small and that is seen going from right to left about about 1/3 in to the clip, then turns to go to the right, mingling with the others in the corner of the window sill. It's not only smaller than all the others. It runs faster. Is this just another caste of the same species? How many castes are there?
