Stick-protected egg or insect

Stick-protected egg or insect
Southernmost point of Staten Island, Richmond County, New York, USA
September 10, 2010
Size: 0.5 inch
Found on a spicebush leaf in a shaded area of the woods. This tiny collection of sticks was thoroughly stuck to the leaf surface, and standing upright. Could this be protecting an egg mass or pupal stage?
