Lorquin's Admiral - Limenitis lorquini

Lorquin's Admiral - Limenitis lorquini
Umatilla National Forest, 5000 feet elevation, Umatilla County, Oregon, USA
August 9, 2011
Size: ~35mm body
Working a muddy seep. Does anyone know why butterflies do this? Is it just for the water?

Definitely a Lorquin's Admiral
Moved from ID Request.

"Puddling"...
Not just for water, but also for minerals. Many butterflies need additional minerals, such as calcium, sodium and others, in order to be healthy and stay reproductively active. They will also take minerals from the tears/secretions from animals, especially reptiles like turtles and crocodiles, as well as from feces and urine.
